Heavily loaded network servers can experience resource exhastion. At best, resource exhaus-tion will slow server response, but left uncor-rected, it can result in a crash of the server. In order to understand and prevent such sit-uations, a knowledge of the internal operation of the operating system is required, especially how memory management works.
This paper will provide an understanding of the memory management of OpenBSD, how to monitor the current status of the system, why crashes occur and how to prevent them.
